The video posted was directed by Guy Aroch and it is part of a series called....get this...#DefineBeauty. Aroch wants you to believe that this artistic video is about "redefining" beauty but it is really not. If you watch it with the sound on, you'll hear a variety of men and women defining what they believe is the "Magic Gap" but not once does anyone refer to what is actually the thigh gap. This seems to make me think that he is the only thinking the thigh gap is so magical. If not, then why call the video "The Magic Gap"?
According to Steinkellner, Aroch shared that he did not know that the thigh gap fixation even existed because he is a male (he is actually quoted saying this!) Instead of bringing attention to the issue, which is that there is a fixation on the thigh gap, he just brought more attention to the fact that this is a standard of beauty. His video clearly displays that he does not have a problem with the thigh gap. In fact, he glamorizes it. The video states that society views the thigh gap as beautiful but it does nothing to challenge or dispute the idea that thigh gaps are magical and great.
In addition to this video being a whole lot of pointless, he uses known models to film for this. No "Average" women were used as models in the making of his video. Perhaps if he was more direct with his question about the thigh gap, he would have received more suitable answers to use in the video. I mean if you're going to just show us a video of model thigh gaps at least show us some meaningful words to go along with it. I could picture this video with girls saying things like "I hate that I don't have a thigh gap, although many girls do not have a thigh gap" or "Rubbing thighs are beautiful." Maybe this type of interviewing would have given the video more meaning and purpose?
Steinkellner makes a great point when she says that you never see the faces of the models and that the shots "make women look like meat instead of people." This is really supposed to diffuse the thigh gap craze? I couldn't say it better when she writes: "It just upholds the fashion world’s narrow-mindedness about “acceptable” body shapes. And it’s giving the thigh gap the vomit-inducing new title “the magic gap” which fetishes, glamorizes and makes it sound desirable and makes the whole issue about ONE THOUSAND times worse."
What do you think about the video? Am I overreacting? Does this video glamorize the thigh gap or does it bring attention to the very serious issue of girls wanting the "magical gap"?

Please remember that thigh gaps only exist on some women. They exist not because of how skinny one might be, but because of genetic bone disposition. A thigh gap is determined by the width of your genetically defined hips or in other words it has to do with your bone structure. There is really nothing you can do to change the way your bones are structured. Most women who have thigh gaps, have a certain hip to femoral head ratio (aka this is the highest part of the hip bone). There is no amount of dieting that can change this and it's not safe or healthy to aspire to this look! Please also remember that most of the time, the thigh gaps we see in magazines are digitally altered to appear wider than they really are.
Remember thigh gap or not, you are beautiful as you are...love your average body!
