To show this, Debenhams released before and after images of one of their models to illustrate the differences. These images show how extreme the difference is. We need more of these images to really understand how severe the effect is on girls and young women...they are literally being shown images of women that do not exist! Not only do women internalize the ideas regarding what they should look like...and so do men...this is problematic on so many levels.
In addition to this, they provided the unretouched image with the usual directions for altering the image (see image on the left). The directions include reducing the models body size, flattening her stomach, remove and lines or out of place hairs...etc.
The image was originally posted on facebook and a company representative wrote that: “We’re showing our commitment to encouraging positive body-image by using un-airbrushed lingerie photography. Here’s an example of how images are sometimes retouched, but we think our model is naturally gorgeous.”
Debenhams new motto is to make "women feel fabulous about themselves rather than crushing their self-esteem by using false comparisons." Yeah...let's do that please!
Debenhams is calling on other retailers to do the same...anyone else out there?? What do you think about the images? Do these images make you want to shop at Debenhams more? What other retailers would you want to see follow suit?
