These advertisements were caricature drawings of women in a Ford Figo (including the celebrity Kardashian sisters) who were bound and gagged. The words "Leave your worries behind" were written below the pictures of scantily clad gagged women who are depicted as being in the back of the vehicle.
One of the pictures shows former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as driving the vehicle with three bound and gagged women, including a police officer. Although Ford has apologized for the ad and have issued a statement about the fact that the pictures were "created by individuals within the agency but did not go through the normal review and oversight process."
My first thought was how over sexualized they made the women appear in the pictures and secondly I thought that if these women weren't bound and gagged and put in the back of a vehicle they would have been seen as perfectly normal for our society. The ads are only seen as disgusting because they promote violence and rape against women but not because they depict women as being over sexual. In my opinion, the biggest problem is that this is normal. Seeing scantily clad women is normal. No one seems to be offended by their lack of clothing or voluptuous breasts because they are too outraged by the tape on their mouths.
Now I am not saying that the bound and gagged images are not disgusting and wrong...what I am saying is that if they weren't bound and gagged there would be no controversy. How many ads have we seen with picture perfect women sitting, lying, or leaning on a car? Quite a few! Car magazines are filled with "babes" next to cars and car shows have models that prance around the cars to make them seem more enticing.
What do you think? Do most car advertisements target the male viewer with sexy models? Why is this the norm?
