You could say that Kate Upton defies the odds with her modeling career. Kate Upton has taken a step outside of fashion industry norms by not being stick thin and a size 0...something that is almost impossible to do. There has been a lot of unrest from people who are unable to classify where she fits in the modeling world. Is she skinny or fat? Thin or plus size? Neither or both? There is no certainty as to what size she actually is. In fact, I've read that she is a size 2, 4, and even 8. Perhaps she fluctuates like many other Average Girls? The media either loves or hates her body. Some say she's defying beauty standards and others say she doesn't fit into them.
Upton tells Vogue UK that "I never imagined that I would be in a position to be a role model. I just focused on being healthy and being the best that I could be. I'm happy to be seen as a good example. If I can help and influence girls who are going through body-image issues then I think that's amazing."
I have mixed feelings about Kate Upton being a role model because while I think she is helping change modeling industry standards by not being a size 0, I also think that her image presents a problem for girls that will think her body is the only alternative to thin standards. She is good for the modeling industry but is she good for the viewers at home? At the end of the day, Kate Upton is a tall, slim, tanned, blonde, big breasted beauty. What do you think? Is Kate a positive role model for girls?
The other side to this is the huge backlash Kate Upton is getting for representing a different type of body in the industry. A recent blog post from a website (I am not going to name because they do not deserve any more attention than they are already getting) that called Kate Upton a fat animal who has "huge thighs, NO waist, big fat floppy boobs, terrible body definition." Yikes. This is the kind of response that is received when people take a few baby steps outside of societal standards? This is a problem!
The fact of the matter is Kate Upton is beautiful, but there are also many other beautiful people that are not represented in the fashion, modeling, media and entertainment industries. I want to see Average Girls in the media but if Kate Upton is as close as its going to get for now, I'll take it.
